I hope everyone’s having a restful Labor Day weekend. It’s been a bit of a tough week logistics-wise with preschool ending but the new school year not yet starting. It feels like all the parent friends I have were in similar situations: what are people supposed to do? For this year, we asked our home-based daycare provider if Charlotte could come back for the week. The curriculum was probably far below her level, but it’s a plan that worked!
I’m heading back to school again this fall, too (working towards a PhD… which is exciting!), and my schedule was super inflexible with orientation week. This extra time this weekend is a welcome change to spend the days with the kids and the evenings getting organized and ready for all that the coming weeks hold.

Sunday Morning Coffee: August 11, 2019
It’s been a gorgeous week of weather here in Boston, and we’re trying to take advantage of all the city and the summer have to offer. We’ve been out and about doing as much al fresco dining and sipping as possible (which, with two little kids, actually isn’t all that possible). We’ve also been in celebration mode as David’s birthday was this past week. The timing of things got a bit thrown off because of work schedules, but we’ve had a lot of fun family time together.

The start of the month is always an exciting time, though I can’t believe we’re already in August. July has been a FULL month, with lots of family and lots of travel. First up, my sisters and I had a great time visiting Killington, Vermont in the summer months. It’s a popular ski resort, but we had a blast getting outdoors and hiking the mountains and visiting (multiple times) the Long Trail Brewery (which has a gorgeous babbling brook and outdoor seating, and warm soft pretzels with boozy cheese).

Boston has seen a lot of hot weather this week, so I’m grateful for the chance to get away to the Green Mountains of Vermont this weekend. My sisters and I had a long weekend together, just the three of us. It’s been ages since I’ve been away from my kids that long, and they’ve been super affectionate since I came back home this afternoon.
Sunday Morning Coffee: July 7, 2019
I’ve been luxuriating in the company of my parents this week. We played trivia on Monday night as a family (and won first place!), I spent a spontaneous evening relaxing at their place on Tuesday night when I felt like I just needed a break, and we celebrated the fourth of July with grilling and fireworks (see below for some of my favorite summer recipes, both of which made an appearance at your July 4th fest).
It was Charlotte’s first time staying up late enough to watch the fireworks, and she did so well! We’re super lucky that we live close enough to Boston that we can watch the “spectacular” they put on every year. We brought headphones to protect C’s ears, but the noise was manageable and she didn’t need them. I hoisted her on my hip for most of the show, which meant my arms got a bit tired, and on the walk home, she was resting her on our shoulders and transitioned right to bed.
On the whole, it’s been a week full of family and fun, and I’m so grateful. And I’m also ready to get my systems and schedule back on track in the days ahead.

Sunday Morning Coffee: June 30, 2019
We’ve had a pretty full week to close out the month of June. My parents are in town, which means there are lots of get-togethers for dinner, and nights run later than we’re used to. It’s so much fun, but I notice the little bumps in the road when I get disconnected from my routines and systems. I’m writing this morning from the couch in my parents’ house. We stayed over last night, and the kids are still sleeping upstairs.

It’s been pretty cold, gray week here in Boston, with most days overcast and drizzly. On my walk yesterday morning, I saw this garden full of brilliantly colored flowers, which was a breath of fresh air, even as it was lightly raining and 50 degrees.
Sunday Morning Coffee: April 7, 2019
We’ve had a lot of chilly days this week, but right now, we’re in the middle of a glorious 60-degree sunny weekend. Everyone is out an enjoying the green spaces in the city. It’s been a lovely week, mostly productive, mostly stable, with the usual ups and downs. Nothing rocking the boat too much, which is OK with me.

It’s the first week of spring, the weather’s a bit warmer this weekend, and the first flowers of the season are peaking up out of the dirt in bursts of color. They’re few and far between, but they point to the green on the horizon. I also spent the week wrapping up some projects from the winter and really looking forward to the coming seasons, including attending an admitted students’ day at a PhD program I’m looking in to for the fall. Accordingly, it’s been a busy, busy week (reflected in our weekly menu), but it’s been loads of fun, too.

It feels like spring is just peeking around the corner. I’m making the most of the winter produce that’s left, and anticipating the abundance of the coming months. I’ve done lemon-poppyseed cake, a grapefruit loaf, and now I’ve got a pie cooling on the counter. I don’t know how I found the energy to put that together because we’ve had our hands full at home. For no apparent reason, the kids have been a lot to take on this weekend.
And yet I enjoy them. Here’s what else I’m reading, eating, and enjoying this week:
